Henry Gartley has assembled some great historical photos taken around the lake. You can view them here.

Until proven otherwise, the photo below is of the smokestack of the steamship Mabel, which was used to give tours of the lake in the early 20th century.  Before that, it was used as a ferry between Eastport, Maine and St. Andrews, New Brunswick.  The photo was taken at the southwestern end of the lake.
Mabel's smokestack?

The SS Mabel, in better times:

The two photos below, provided by Joe Inman, are of the Houlton Community Golf Course and were taken early in the 20th century.  In the upper photo, note the damage to the west face of the "mountain" from a recent forest fire.

The photo below is of the Cunningham home (now belonging to Tom and Andy Pierce) taken from the spot where Dr. Chester and Ann Hogan built their home. The open field is now covered with 60 foot pine trees.

If you have photos of historical significance that you think other lake residents might enjoy viewing, please send them to makeitbetter@nickersonlake.com.  We will post them on this site within a few days of receipt.
